The game is about connecting cities with train routes and completing secret tickets (destination cards), which give you points if you connect specific cities on the map.

Setup

  1. Place the game board on the table.
  2. Each player chooses a color and gets 45 trains and a score marker.
  3. Shuffle the train car cards and give each player 4 cards.
  4. Shuffle the ticket cards and give each player 3 cards – you must keep at least 2.
  5. Place 5 train car cards face up next to the deck.

How to play Ticket to Ride

The game is played in turns, where you choose one of three actions:

  • Draw train car cards: Take two cards (from the face-up cards or from the deck). Locomotive cards (wild) can only be taken as your first card if you choose a face-up locomotive.
  • Build a train route: Play the required color and number of cards to build a route between two cities. Place your trains on the route and score points immediately.
  • Draw new ticket cards: Take three new ticket cards – you must keep at least one.

How to score points

  • Building routes: Every time you build a route, you get points (the longer the route, the more points).
  • Completed tickets: When the game ends, you get extra points for each ticket you have completed (connected the two cities).
  • Uncompleted tickets: You lose points for tickets you have not completed.
  • Bonus: The player with the longest continuous train route gets 10 bonus points.

Strategy and tips

Plan your routes

Make a strategy to connect your destinations as efficiently as possible. If you can use the same stretch for several tickets, you save trains and turns.

Keep an eye on your opponents

If an opponent builds close to your planned route, it can pay off to quickly secure the most important stretches. Some routes exist only in one color and can easily block your plan.

Choose tickets carefully

Don’t take more tickets than you can realistically complete. Uncompleted tickets give minus points – sometimes it’s better to go for a few, but certain, routes.

Locomotives are valuable

Locomotive cards act as wild cards and can be used for any color – save them for the long or difficult routes.
