Pied Flycatcher Title Image

Introduction

The European pied flycatcher is an easily recognizable bird, which primarily inhabits deciduous forests. It is a migratory bird that only stays in Denmark during the summer period.

Facts

Habitats

The bird lives in open deciduous forests, but it can also settle in nest boxes set up in gardens. A male can have several females, but always in the same area.

In September, it flies south, and during the winter period it stays in northwestern Africa.

Diet

The European pied flycatcher lives exclusively on insects.

Appearance and characteristics

The male is easy to recognize by its black and white plumage, which can sometimes also become more brownish. However, it closely resembles the collared flycatcher, but since that species is very rare in Denmark, it will rarely be a problem.

The female can resemble other female flycatchers, but is best recognized by the white markings on its wings.
