The nature in the national park is very special because of its location facing the North Sea. Out to the west, it is a very desolate landscape, with dunes facing the water and the heathlands behind them. The heathlands are characterized by vegetation consisting of dwarf shrubs. Since the beginning of the 19th century, there have been many attempts at planting trees, which have succeeded in part with mountain pine, and gradually other tree species are also being sown among the mountain pines.
