Introduction

The white wagtail is one of Denmark's most common breeding birds and, with its distinctive appearance and wagging tail, it is also one of the birds that most people recognize.

Facts

Habitats

The white wagtail mostly inhabits open landscapes. During the breeding season, it is very territorial, and wagtail males are often seen in May-June chasing each other.

Wagtails are migratory birds and during the winter period, it stays in southern Europe and North Africa.

Diet

The white wagtail lives almost exclusively on insects but can also eat grain and seeds. The insects are typically caught from the ground, where the wagtail runs around and occasionally briefly takes off from the ground to catch flying insects.

Appearance and characteristics

Wagtails are easily recognizable by their long wagging tails. The white wagtail is also easily distinguished from the other wagtail species by its black and white plumage.
